What’s the difference between HiCo and LoCo Magnetic Cards?

High Coercivity or “HiCO”

HiCo cards have a stronger magnetic field. This makes them more durable because the data encoded on the stripes are less likely to unintentionally be erased when exposed to an outside magnetic field.

HiCo cards have a longer card life. Credit cards, bank cards, gift cards, and access control cards frequently use HiCo technology.

Low Coercivity or “LoCo”

LoCo cards are typically used for short-term life. These are used for hotel room keys or day passes for events.

For gift cards, HiCo cards are recommended. You will be able to reuse HiCo gift cards where LoCo cards would either need to be re-encoded or replaced.
